FIRST AID FOR ANIMALS

first-aidWARNING: When animals are scared, injured or in pain they are more likely to bite.

Yes, this even applies to the friendliest of dogs!  If you are injured, you are less likely to be in a position to assist the animal so keep yourself safe at all times.

Have a FIRST AID KIT in a convenient place and follow these basic guidelines:

Minor wounds:    Clip hair, clean area with saline, apply dressing, secure with bandage.

Fractures:            Stop bleeding by applying pressure, keep limb & animal still, call vet.

Shock:                 Stop bleeding by applying pressure, lie flat, keep warm & still, call vet.

Poisoning:          Name of poison/active ingredient, call vet. If eye or skin flush with saline.

Cane Toad:          Flush mouth with water for 10 minutes using a forward action.

* If neurological signs or seizures, call vet*

Snake Bite:          Call vet, describe snake if possible, keep animal still, don’t kill the snake.

Tick paralysis:     Smother tick with wart freeze, aerogard or pawpaw ointment.  Leave for five minutes and remove tick twister. Keep the tick and call the vet!
